HAMBURG, June 22 1999 (AFP) — A 29-year-old German man on Tuesday was sentenced to four years in prison by a Hamburg court for deliberately infecting his wife with HIV.

The unemployed man continued to have unprotected sex with his wife after learning in 1994 that he had contracted the deadly virus, an administrative tribunal ruled.

A civil court in this northern port city has already ordered him to pay his wife, from whom he is now separated, almost 128,000 euros (132,000 dollars), one of the highest awards for damages ever given in Germany.

He must also pay her a monthly pension of 510 euros (525 dollars).
